Chapter Twenty-five: Isla

This is Not a Date

The door slides shut and guilt over leaving Jaden kicks in. I remind myself she has a husband now. I need to back away and let him care for her. "All right, Winter White, where to?"

I realize I've spoken aloud when Ra'von stops to give me an inquiring look. "Winter White?"

"Your hair and hide are the exact color of a snowflake and your eyes match mine—glacier blue. So you and I are, by my definition, Winter White." I shrug cheerfully.

Ra'von nods as if I’ve made perfect sense, then indicates the door next to mine. "My apartment, then on to the waterfall.”

"Your apartment? But I barely know you." The look on his face is priceless. "Seriously though, why the waterfall?”

He knuckles his door open. "The waterfall is where we get the water my brother wants for your sister.”

“And how do you know what he wants?"

“Because I am smart."

"And conceited, too. But I guess that's because you’re so pretty in your dragon form. A little conceit is to be expected."

He pretends to look offended. "Pretty? A dragon is fierce, loyal, protective and deadly. We are not pretty."

His cave is twice the size of mine. The living area is bathed in masculine colors, the couches both light and dark brown. His Plasnet dwarfs the one in my apartment. It plays Dremkin music and magic splatters in different colored sparkles against the high ceiling and walls. Black shelves adorn an entire wall, each one covered with models of cave homes, complete with paint and furniture. Another model sits on the table, half completed. Ramps and staircases adorn the inside and outside of each one. There are even tiny mock security orbs in the corridors.

I busy myself with finding the differences between the models. After some time has passed, I glance up and find piercing blue eyes watching me from the corner of the room. Ra'von has a large sealed plastic bucket in his left hand and a sack in his right.

I point at a large model with ledges on it—from which, I assume, Dragons would launch. It also has courtyards for landing and a pool with actual running water. The overall affect draws the eye and it takes considerable effort for me to resist touching it. "This one is my favorite. The ramps and the pool are impressive. Did you make these? The attention to detail is spectacular."

"Just a hobby," he replies and holds up an empty water container. "Ready?"

The door slides open at his touch and I follow him out of the cave system and through the maze to a large garage full of vegos. I shake my head. "You guys have a serious vego problem."

Ra'von's laugh rolls through the garage. "Draven and I don't share well." He nods toward the large door at the back of the cavern and it slides open to reveal an enormous ledge. The view is beautiful, most people would give their Esprit for just a glimpse.

He hands me the bucket and sack, then takes off his shirt.
